Day 1 Sh Sh Sh Let the Baby Sleep Virtual Book Tour

Welcome to the first day of our Superhero Zachary’s Book Tour for Sh Sh Sh Let the Baby Sleep.” Our first guest, Jack Foster, is the illustrator of the book.  He has captured the essence of each character and the humorous approach to the story.

Jack also illustrates for the online magazines, Stories for Children and Guardian Angel Kids. He spent many years as a political cartoonist for five Chicago area newspapers but his cute style described as a Muppet-Disney mix, is kid friendly and just right for children’s books.

Jack has consented to an interview.  If you have any questions for him, please ask them in the comment section.

Q. Where do you live?       I live in Lisle Illinois, about 30 miles west of Chicago.
Q. Do you have any pets?  Do you ever draw your pets?      I have a cat named Jasper. He has been the subject of a lot of my work. We had a very cute dog. His name was Tucker. I loved to draw him. He was so fluffy and always smiling.
Q: What made you decide to become an artist?      I love animals. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a veterinarian. Then I saw a Walt Disney episode that showed the making of Bambi. Walt Disney brought in a live bunny and put it in the center of the table. All the artist’s sat around the table and drew as the bunny hopped around on the table. I said to myself. “That’s what I want to do!” (Draw animals, not hop around on a table :o)

Q: Did you take art lessons?      I got married right out of high school, so I got a good paying job and went to night school at The American Academy of Art in Chicago. I took cartooning and drawing classes. Then 20 years later I went back and took some computer art classes.

Q: What is the hardest part about illustrating a book?       The hardest part is the consistency. Trying to maintain the same “look” of the characters, as well as their clothing, hairstyles and proportions. In one of my books, I didn’t notice that I had changed the color of the main characters shirt in the middle of the story…oooops…. Maybe he ran home and changed when we weren’t looking :o)

Q: Please describe the process you go through to illustrate a book.     When illustrating a book, I fist read through the whole story a couple of times. I visualize the characters mostly at first. Then I sketch out the characters. Then, depending on the number of pages, I break up the story into even segments. I read and reread a segment. I already have the characters, so I start visualizing them in the story, page by page. Then I do up a quick storyboard, which looks like a giant comic strip. The rest is just refining the sketches, scanning them into my computer and painting them.

Q: Why did you decide to illustrate Sh Sh Sh Let the Baby Sleep?       I love the story. I was a big brother and I could identify with Zachary and his adventurous imagination. I like to draw stories with adventure, animals and apple sauce… there wasn’t any apple sauce in the story, but two out of three worked for me ;o)

Q: How long did it take for you to illustrate Sh Sh Sh Let the Baby Sleep?   It took me about two and a half months.  Each illustration takes between eight and twelve hours  … the cover a little longer.

Q: What materials and supplies did you use for the pictures?      All I use is a pencil and a sketchbook. The rest is done digitally on the computer.

Q: How did you decide on the cover?    Actually, I had drawn a baby sleeping on a moon about ten years ago. It was always one of my favorites. I decided to redo it with Layla. Then I added Zachary making the sh sh sh sound. I wanted the reader to get an idea of some of the adventure in the story, so I included the bear and train. I took a while to set it up so it didn’t look crowded and still had enough room for the title.

Q: Which illustration in this book is your favorite and why?    There is a page where Zachary is pushing Layla in the stroller and a big wind kicks up! That was a blast… so much going on. Zachary is startled and struggling to hold onto the stroller. He has one foot in the air. The blanket is blowing away and baby Layla is not vey happy.  It became my favorite because it was the most fun to draw.

Q: Do you model your characters from real people?     I was thinking about myself as a kid when I was drawing Zachary, then I remembered a friend of mine in kindergarten who had this cool wave in his hair. So I gave him the “wave”. Thanks to Bobby Farrell… where ever you are ;o)

Q: Was there part of the story that was difficult to illustrate?     On one page, Zachary flies up to the top of a bookcase to get some diapers. It was difficult to make it look like he was soaring in front of the bookcase and not climbing or standing on a shelf.

Q: You have an incredible talent for showing movement in your illustrations. What are your secrets?       I’m the dad of five kids. There was always something going on at our house. I learned how to harness the energy in the house by capturing it in sketchbooks.  My kids taught me a lot.

Q: Do you have a collection of your own artwork?      I have a portfolio of all my best work… I guess you could call it a collection. Since most of my work is done digitally, I have to print  any work that I want to keep physically.

Q: Do you hang illustrations in your home as artwork?     Sometimes I’ll be working on a project and my wife will tell me that she would like something like that in a frame to hang in our house. I’ve done a few, but honestly, she is such a wonderful woman, I should do a lot more for her.

Q: Do you have any wise words for students who like to draw?      Your sketchbook…Don’t leave home without it! Also, set an illustration goal. There are so many avenues to take. If you like comic art… make your own comic book,  children’s art… make up a “dummy” book. Set a goal, and do one thing every day toward that goal. Even if it only takes you ten minutes, do it. In a year you will amaze yourself at how far you’ve come and how much you’ve grown as an artist. I speak from experience. I let weeks turn into months and into years without pursuing my God given talents. Then I set a goal and did a thing a day.

Q. What is your favorite medium?       I don’t have patience for oils. I like that acrylics dry quickly. …I’ve always loved airbrushing. I try to give my children’s book illustrations a kind of airbrush feel.

Q. What artists/styles have influenced you the most?        Walt Disney has inspired me as an artist and as a person. He was an amazing man who never gave up. His feature length films have some of the most wonderful artwork. Also, my character style has definitely been influenced by Jim Henson of Muppet fame. Most of my characters have large round eyes sitting atop their heads…. ala Elmo, Burt, Ernie…. etc…..:o)

Q. Do you also paint besides what you do for books?      I do airbrushed murals for our church’s kid’s rooms and have done some in homes as well. We are renting now, so I don’t have any murals in my home…. It’s too hard to take them with us when we move. :o)

Q. Do you also write?    Reading all the wonderful stories that I have had the privilege of illustrating has given me the writing bug. I have started several stories… but MAN, writing is hard!  Maybe someday, but for now I’ll stick to the easy stuff. :o)

Book Review: The Fisherman's Wife by Dianne G. Sagan

Title: The Fisherman’s Wife
Author: Dianne G. Sagan
Genre: Middle Grade
Publisher: Buoy Up Press
ISBN: 978-0-937660-63-8
Paperback: 107 pages
Price: $11.95

Would you like to travel back to biblical times and experience the life of the wife of a fisherman from Capernaum?  Then you would enjoy “The Fisherman’s Wife” by Dianne Sagan.

Dianne Sagan’s historical fiction is rich in Jewish customs and traditions.  After formalized negotiations between their fathers, Simon asked for Johanna’s hand in marriage.

“Simon took her hand and placed a gold coin in herm palm as a sign of their betrothal.  He said, ‘Behold, you are consecrated unto me with this token according to the law of Moses and Isreal.’”

Johanna’s happiness eventually soured after repeated tries to give birth ended in disappointment and shame.  Her inner turmoil was matched by the society turmoil that existed from the cruel treatment by the Roman Empire.

“Johanna heard screaming and thundering horse’s hooves in the street….. One of the soldiers threw a net over two men running in front of them.  The two men fell and rolled in the net like fish trying to swim free.”

When Johanna’s husband and several others left their boats to follow a traveling Rabbi, Johanna was left wondering who would provide for her and her sick mother.  Bitterness grew in her heart.  Johanna faced the biggest decision of her life.

“The Fisherman’s Wife” will captivate those eight years old and up.  As a retired teacher I recommend this book for home, school and church libraries.

Thank You for Your Wonderful Support!

I'm up to 404 votes!!!

Many of you know that I joined a picture book contest. What you don't know is that I feel that I've won already. So many of my friends and family have voted day after day for me. It's extremely encouraging.

I've made many new friends on Lulu as well. Complete strangers vowed to help me. I've featured some of their books on twitter and facebook. I'm going to do some blog posts for others. Writers are pretty cool people.

One of my church friends had had trouble sleeping. When she went to vote for me, she found a natural sleep aid that has helped her sleep!

A guy I hadn't seen since High School is voting for me every day!!!

My church has rallied around me as well!

If you're hearing about this for the first time, I need your help.

I entered the contest late so I have to catch up to others who have many votes already.  It's very difficult, but not impossible.  40% of my score is the number of votes.  60% of my score is the story, use of their illustrations, and grammar.  (I had to eliminate some paragraph breaks and words to fit the story in the 4 small pages provided.)  I just need to get in range of the high scorers to win!!

You can vote once a day until November 22, 2010.  If you put the link in your favorites, it would only take seconds each day.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Please vote, here's the link:

Title: Animal Sound Mix-Up
Author: Connie Arnold
Illustrator: Kit Grady
Genre: Picture book
Publisher: Guardian Angel Publishing, Inc.
ISBN-13: 978-161633-083-5
e-book-13: 978-1-61633-084-2
Paperback: 14 pages

Congratulations to author, Connie Arnold, for her delightful picture book, animal Sound Mix-Up.  Her rhyme and rhythm is music to my ears.  Children will giggle as they imagine animals speaking with the wrong sound.

"What if a lion said meow . . .
or if a donkey said bow-wow?

Wouldn’t it seem quite funny now
if they became mixed up somehow?"

Kit Grady, the illustrator captured the humor of this book with colorful, action filled pictures.  This book would be a great addition to every school and home library.

Become a Fan of Children’s Author & Illustrator, Monique and Alexa Peters

This month I'm hosting Day 6 of the Virtual Book Tours for all the children's book authors/illustrators who are part of the October Showcase at the National Writing for Children Center. Today I'm pleased to be hosting Day 6 of the tour for authors Alexa and Monique Peters.

In June 2010, my daughter and I traveled to Peru with the Happy Hearts Fund and Petra Nemcova and were able to meet with the children of Peru and share our book, "Cooper and Me", with them.

My daughter, Alexa,  left Peru feeling greatly inspired. Her goal was to raise enough funds through the sale of the books to build a school in Haiti.

What began as a few sketches of our family dog has grown into something more profound. Alexa is using her passion for art and love of animals to help bring hope and happiness to children who have lost so much.

The Cooper and Me project has evolved to include a CD with original songs for each book, stuffed “Cooper” and “Bella” toys, a matching doghouse and backpacks for kids. Visit our website at http://www.cooperandme.com

The authors contribute three dollars from the sale of each “Cooper and Me” book to support the Happy Hearts Fund, a charity that builds schools for children in areas affected by natural disaster. Supermodel Petra Nemcova, who survived the 2004 Tsunami in Thailand, founded the charity.

In recognition of her “Buy a Book, Help Build a School” fundraising campaign, Alexa was named the youngest ambassador for the Happy Hearts Fund. For more information on the Happy Hearts Fund, go to http://www.happyheartsfund.org.

Become a Fan of Children's Author, L. D. Harkrader

Finding Fans by L.D. Harkrader
All writers want to reach their readers. Unfortunately, no one knows for sure the best way to reach them. I’m not sure, either, but over the years I’ve developed guidelines that work for me:
The best promotional tool is a good story well told. The easiest way to tell people about my book is to let enthusiastic others do it for me, and if I’ve done my job—created engaging characters, a powerful setting, a page-turning plot, gripping tension, and a bang-up ending—it’s more likely that my publisher, reviewers, bookstore owners, librarians, and, ultimately, readers will love my book and want to run out and tell other people about it.
Life’s too short to spend time doing things you hate. No one promotional method will work for every writer or every book, and no author will feel comfortable with every method. I decided years ago to promote my books only in the ways I enjoyed and was good at, and forget the rest.
For example, many authors get lists of bookstores across the country and call each one, telling the manager about their book. It works for some writers, but it’s something I’ll never to do. I know the bookstore owners in my area. It’s been amazing the way they’ve stocked and promoted my books. I always let them know when I have a new book out, but I don’t feel comfortable calling busy bookstore owners I’ve never met to try to sell them on my latest.
However, as an artist as well as a writer, there are some promotional endeavors I do well and enjoy. I designed my website (www.ldharkrader.com) and love keeping it up to date. Likewise, I’ve designed bookmarks, posters, and a book trailer (www.ldharkrader.com/Trailers.html). I do school visits and speak at library conferences, which can be nerve-wracking at first, but I’ve found that, shy as I am, I like talking about writing and books. And of course I write articles for blogs when I’m asked, because hey, I’m a writer—I love to write.

The second best promotional tool is my next book. If I spend all my time promoting one book, I’ll never have time to write the next, so I make sure that writing is always my top priority. After all, the best way to reach readers is to keep giving them something to read.

PLEASE VOTE! I NEED YOUR HELP MY FRIENDS!

I've entered a story book contest a little late.  Some people have over 800 votes already.  But I have so many great friends, I know I can catch up.

I could only use 4 pages of text and had to use their illustrations.  I really had to squeeze the words on the page.  So the story was limited in many ways.

YOU CAN VOTE ONCE A DAY!

THANKS FOR YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT.

Amazon Review of Too Many Tutus by D. Fowler
Christina was getting ready to go to ballet class, but she was having a little problem. It wasn't serious mind you, but it put her in a quandary. She couldn't decide which tutu to wear to class because she had "too too many tutus!" Her Mommy told her to go to her Daddy for advice, but he gently told her that she would have to decide for herself. Her brother Max had the best idea. He told her to take them put them all on her bed. That way when she looked "at them all together" it would be much easier for her to pick one. Now that sounded like a plan!

Her tutus captured every color in the rainbow and her imagination was sparked thinking how beautifully she would look and how gracefully she could dance with each one. Her green one would be perfect for an "outdoors dance," she could "whirl and twirl under the bright blue sky" with the blue one, but if she put on her violet tutu she "could dance with the iris and the violets and the lilacs on an early spring day." There were so many colorful choices to make, but in the end she made the perfect decision. Which color do you think she chose?!

This was a charming tale your little ballerina will love and will reach for time and time again. The whimsical illustrations were very appealing their spirit meshed perfectly with the text. Each time Christina tried on a new tutu the book came alive as she danced and posed on the pages. If you have a little dance fan in your house, this one is sure to be a hit!

Become a Fan of Children's Author Nicole Weaver

This month I'm hosting Day 6 of the Virtual Book Tours for all the children's book authors/illustrators who are part of the October Showcase at the National Writing for Children Center. Today I'm pleased to be hosting Day 1 of the tour for author Nicole Weaver.  Thanks for stopping by today Nicole.  I've been following your book tour with The National Writing For Children's Center.  You've been on some wonderful blogs telling folks how you got started as an author, and what your working on next.  Your book is rather unique because it's written in three languages: English, Spanish, and French.  I know that you also teach languages in a public school.  I think picture books are a great way to help kids learn languages.  Even big kids like me.

"I am hoping my trilingual book will attract fans from all over the world."

This is a delightful, heart warming story that kids will love to read over and over again.  They will even learn about sea turtles!

Become a Fan of Children’s Author Karen Cioffi

Acquiring facebook friends is similar to working to get traffic to your site. I find article marketing is a great tool to create visibility, get yourself established as an expert in your field/niche, and bring traffic to your site. The same holds true for facebook. If you provide valuable information to readers, they will want to become a facebook friend or fan, and follow you on twitter.

Promotion is pretty much the same for whatever you are trying to do:

1. Learn your craft, so you have something to offer
2. Create visibility with a website or blog, and blog regularly
3. Provide valuable content
4. Do article marketing
5. Use the social networks
6. Establish yourself as an expert
