Walking Through Walls Virtual Book Tour

Walking Through Walls
Today, I have the honor of hosting my good friend and respected colleague, Karen Cioffi, for her virtual book tour!

TITLE: Walking Through Walls
AUTHOR: Karen Cioffi
PUBLISHER: 4RV Publishing http://4rvpublishingllc.com
FORMAT: Paperback
PAGES: 61
PRICE: $14.99 (US)
ISBN:13: 9780982659472
ILLUSTRATOR: WillowRaven http://WillowRaven.weebly.com
In her new middle grade chapter book, “Walking Through Walls,” Karen Cioffi takes you on an incredible journey with her main character, Wang.  He longs to learn the magic of the Eternals.
Twelve-year-old Wang longed to be an Eternal. He craved wealth . . . and power. Spending his time learning about these mystics took his thoughts away from the certain fate of slaving in the wheat fields all his life, like his father. The wheat fields might be good for some, but not for Wang. He had higher goals.

Each step of Wang’s journey is full of mystery, challenges and life lessons. Children will enjoy reading this charming ancient legend with a new twist as they experience Mrs. Cioffi’s exciting world of fantasy.  They will learn about Chinese customs because this story is rich in authentic details like the foods, homes, crops, and locations of sixteenth century China.

Wang ambled back to the cottage. He noticed his favorite flower, the lemon lilies, in full bloom. They draped the landscape. Hmm, they smell so good. He found his mother in the chicken coop, bent over one of the hens, gathering the eggs it deposited. “Mother, I am home.”

Artist, Adriana Willow Raven, opens each chapter with a detailed illustration to stimulate the reader’s imagination.  Like the vibrant dragon on the cover, each illustration is rich in oriental detail.

As a retired teacher, I highly recommend this book for every school and home library.

Prepare Your Child for a New Baby

Having a baby is life-altering for you and everyone around you including your other children.  The key to a smooth transition is to have a plan for both preparing and training older siblings. Brainstorm before the child is born to come up with ways of coping with the situations that are bound to arise once the baby has arrived.
Prepare your child:
·         Tap into your child's natural curiosity about babies. Look at picture books together and talk about what's going on inside your body right now and what the baby will be like after birth.
·         If they are old enough to understand, tell them the baby is coming near a certain holiday.
·         Take your children with you to some prenatal meetings. Give them jobs to do like squirting the jelly on your belly.
·         Let them decorate a one piece with fabric paint for the new baby.
·         Have them pick out some things for the baby's room.
·         Ask a friend or relative to give your child some extra time and attention after the baby arrives. This will help him know that he's still special.
Read Sh Sh Sh Let the Baby Sleep to them to show how a big brother loves and protects his new baby sister.
Hover: Whenever the children are together, “hover” close by. If you see your child about to get rough, pick up the baby and distract the older sibling with a song, a toy, an activity or a snack. This action protects the baby while helping you avoid a constant string of “Nos,” which may actually encourage the aggressive behavior.
Teach soft touches: Teach the older sibling how to give the baby a back rub. Tell how this kind of touching calms the baby, and praise the older child for a job well done. This lesson teaches the child how to be physical with the baby in a positive way.
Act quickly: Every time you see your child hit, or act roughly with the baby, act quickly. You might firmly announce, “No hitting, time out.” Place the child in a time-out chair with the statement, “You can get up when you can use your hands in the right way.” Allow him to get right up if he wants – as long as he is careful and gentle with the baby. This isn’t punishment, after all. It’s just helping him learn that rough actions aren’t going to be permitted.
Demonstrate: Children learn what they live. Your older child will be watching as you handle the baby and learning from your actions. You are your child’s most important teacher. You are demonstrating in everything you do, and your child will learn most from watching you.
Praise: Whenever you see the older child touching the baby gently, make a positive comment. Make a big fuss about the important “older brother.” Hug and kiss your older child and tell him how proud you are.
Don't panic if your older one doesn't take to the newborn at first sight. Sibling love sometimes takes a while to blossom.  The keys to a smooth transition are to anticipate and empathize. "Everything will go much more smoothly if you can put yourself in another person's shoes.”

Noises that Wake You UP

As my book tour is coming to an end, I thought we could have some fun. In my book, Sh Sh Sh Let the Baby Sleep, Superhero Zachary must keep his newbaby sister asleep.  All kinds of things wake her up. The wind blows her blanket off. A squawking bird that's fallen out of a tree, a train whistle, and a growling grizzly bear wake her up. Zachary comes to the rescue in each case. In the process, he learns that he loves her.

What kind of things wake you up?

“B” IS FOR BLOGGING FOR KIDS: ROBERT MEDAK

Robert Medak wears many hats very well. He is a freelance writer, editor, book reviewer, and aspiring author. Robert has written or ghost written over 350 articles and 80 book reviews.

Robert created a course for writers at Writers’ Village University (WVU), which he facilitated. He also facilitated other courses at WVU, and helped establish a Creative Writing Workshop at WVU.

Robert is working on a book about breaking into freelance writing.

Robert built a website where he offers his services, and maintains five blogs. Today we are going to feature his kids blog which features animals. Here are some excerpts from http://kidsandanimals.wordpress.com/

Is your dog or cat left-handed? Just like humans, cats and dogs can be either left or right-handed. Did you know that? Not many people do. This could be a chance for you to learn more about your pet. Take a toy and see which paw they use to play with it. Do they use one paw more than the other?

As you interact with your pet, you will be building a greater bond and learning more about the animal family member in the process.

Pets are also like humans in other ways besides preferring one hand over the other. Pets need stimulation to be healthy emotionally. They also need exercise for healthy muscles. Good food and water is only a small portion of what everyone needs, including your furry family members.

Authors are nothing without their readers. It is extremely rewarding for an author to receive feedback from fans, especially from children after a school event. I’d like to invite book lover moms, grandparents, teachers, librarians and teen readers to check out my Facebook fan page and hopefully become a fan. I update the page regularly with the latest news about my books. Remember that one of the greatest legacies you can leave a child is a love of reading. Thank you!

Become a Fan of Children's Author Nicole Weaver

This month I'm hosting Day 6 of the Virtual Book Tours for all the children's book authors/illustrators who are part of the October Showcase at the National Writing for Children Center. Today I'm pleased to be hosting Day 1 of the tour for author Nicole Weaver.  Thanks for stopping by today Nicole.  I've been following your book tour with The National Writing For Children's Center.  You've been on some wonderful blogs telling folks how you got started as an author, and what your working on next.  Your book is rather unique because it's written in three languages: English, Spanish, and French.  I know that you also teach languages in a public school.  I think picture books are a great way to help kids learn languages.  Even big kids like me.

"I am hoping my trilingual book will attract fans from all over the world."

This is a delightful, heart warming story that kids will love to read over and over again.  They will even learn about sea turtles!

Become a Fan of Children’s Author Karen Cioffi

Acquiring facebook friends is similar to working to get traffic to your site. I find article marketing is a great tool to create visibility, get yourself established as an expert in your field/niche, and bring traffic to your site. The same holds true for facebook. If you provide valuable information to readers, they will want to become a facebook friend or fan, and follow you on twitter.

Promotion is pretty much the same for whatever you are trying to do:

1. Learn your craft, so you have something to offer
2. Create visibility with a website or blog, and blog regularly
3. Provide valuable content
4. Do article marketing
5. Use the social networks
6. Establish yourself as an expert

Come Meet 15 Year Old, Student Author, Heather Paye

Today I'd like to introduce you to the Student, Author, Dreamer, Heather Paye. She's a student, who took her dream and made it a reality. H.C.Paye, author of the YA novel A Gift from Above, grew up in a small town in Arizona. She has been writing since 2001 and taking up every challenge that comes her way.

What do you like about growing up in Arizona ?

I love how open the land is, the animals, and the creativity that it all has to offer. It’s a very inspiring place to live. The sunsets are absolutely stunning, and the mornings are so golden. I’ve never had writer’s block and I believe that my environment has a lot to do with that.

What kind of books did you read as a kid?

I used to read the more “girly” books, I remember reading The Saddle Club, The Baby Sitter’s Club, and other books of that type, I read a great number of the classic books, Jane Eyre, Black Beauty, etc. Then I moved on to the Goosebumps series by R.L.Stine I loved those books, there were hundreds of them and I think I still have about 40 of them. So it was really a great many of them, and you can see I was really just trying out a lot of the genres that the world had to offer.

Who is your favorite author?

I’m going to say it would have to be J.K.Rowling, with Nora Roberts coming closely behind.

Who has encouraged you to keep writing?

My mom, definitely my mom.. I remember times when I just wanted to quit writing because in the process of publishing my books things were getting really hard for me and I could hardly keep up, and my relatives were saying bad things about authors and writing and my family really just kept me going, they really supported me and stood behind me, and made sure that I kept going. Especially my mom, she is my savior.

What inspired you to write this story?

My brother was a huge inspiration. After he was born things really didn’t turn out how I planned, he was loud and noisy, and things just changed a lot around the house.. And he was my main inspiration. It was funny, because originally the story was supposed to be this horror like story, and the children in the story were supposed to be possessed and stuff, and it was absolutely amazing how different the story turned out.

How did you come up with the main character, Celia Meyers?

In a way she was a reflection of me, but she also had some characteristics from my mom and my baby sister, so it was really just a compilation of people surrounding me in my life. I’m not exactly sure where I came up with the name, I usually just make up character names on spot and roll my eyes around looking for inspiration, so I assume I did the same with Celia.

Do you have any siblings? Have you ever had trouble with your siblings?

Yes, I have three siblings, one older and two younger. I have had trouble with my siblings; we don’t always get along, we’re great friends, don’t get me wrong, but we don’t have our little arguments, and there is something that I could pick at for each one of them. We have each others backs, even if we do have a few “disagreements” from time to time.

What events changed Celia from a spoiled child to a responsible teenager?

There was this one event the Celia went through where she saved another little boy from a car accident, it reminded her so much of her own little brother and it made her realize that that little boy could have been her brother and she could have lost him, and it also makes her realize how much she actually cares about her sibling.

How did you feel when you finally finished your book?

It wasn’t exactly very much excitement since I was in such a great rush, there was this contest that I was in where I had to write 50,000 words in one month, and I managed to do that, so that was the real excitement, but after that I rushed to actually finish the story, and after that I went straight to editing and then fixing up the layouts and getting the cover ready, and so on. So, it wasn’t exactly very much excitement at the time that I really finished the book. Not as much as when I finished my other novel.

What’s next for you?

Actually there’s quite a bit in the works for me. In the next few years I’m expecting my first novel The Jewel of Onsolot to be published and in stores, but I don’t have any details yet. Since The Jewel of Onsolot is the beginning of a series of nine, of course I’m working on the next book in the series. Also I’m working on a book about a girl who turns into a werewolf. So, there’s quite a bit, I’m not going away any time soon!

Do you participate in writing competitions?

From time to time, not quite so often. There are a few competitions that I do every year, in April I either participate in Script Frenzy, where I try to write 100 page script in one month. And in November, since it is National Novel Writing Month I participate in http://www.nanowrimo.org where you attempt to write 50,000 words in one month. Last year they did some sort of promotion where you can self-publish your novel and get a copy of it free, for a limited time. And that’s what I did, hence my publication.

Where can we purchase your book?

Currently it is available on Amazon.com, Amazon Kindle, Target.com, and of course, CreateSpace.com

Can you explain the Wednesday character feature on your blog?

That is where I tell about a character from my book, like a short little bio of their lives. And it gives the reader a more in-depth look at the other characters besides Celia.. Plus if the reader can’t get enough of the story they can go to the blog and see the extra details and stuff.

Thank you for sharing your book with our readers, Heather.

Don't miss my September 3rd post, which features an article Heather wrote for other aspiring students encouraging them to write their own novel. WAY TO GO, HEATHER.
