"Q" is for "Quiet Night" and "Quiet On Account of Dinosaur"

Quiet Night

Written by Marilyn Singer
Illustrated by John Manders
The opening phrase "The moon is big, the moon is bright" is a great beginning for this adorable story. This is a fun animal noises/counting book, with some unusual word choices -- the eeeeeeeeeeeee of eight mosquitoes, the splash of goose wings on water and, most satisfying of all, the big baarrrrrr-rumph! of a bullfrog. The artwork is highly stylized and somewhat chaotic. The rolling rhythm and wild momentum of the story will pull kids in. It's full of nonsensical words like "rowl-yowl" and "bar-rum". I had fun reading this one. The simple but catchy rhyming verse uses a counting pattern and familiar creatures to tell a cute story of a supposedly "quiet night".

Quiet On Account Of Dinosaur

Written by Jane Thayer
Illustrated by Seymour Fleishman
A goofy, delightful fantasy about a little girl named Mary Ann who is totally koo-koo about dinosaurs. One day she actually finds a dinosaur and brings him home to keep as a pet. Of course, that plan doesn't go over so well, and her mother tells her she'll have to take the dinosaur to stay somewhere else. Of course, her school teacher is entirely sympathetic and agrees to let the big lizard stay and become the school mascot. But Dandy is afraid of all the modern noises and commotion that didn't occur 60 million years ago. "So the children made a sign, which they put in front of school. It said, QUIET on account of dinosaur." She even grows up to be a "famous scientist," the world's greatest expert on dinosaurs, with her very own museum and everything! Great 'Sixties-style artwork, too.

But Dandy is afraid of all the modern noises and commotion that didn't occur 60 million years ago.
"So the children made a sign, which they put in front of school. It said, QUIET on account of dinosaur."

DOGGIE DAY CAMP: VERB & ADVERB ADVENTURES

Author: Cynthia Reeg www.cynthiareeg.com
Illustrations: Kit Grady www.kitgrady.com

When timid Bubba, joins in the adventures at doggie day camp, he soon discovers new friends, new talents, and verb and adverb fun as well. Another book in the Pet Grammar Parade Series. Includes 2 study guides, 6 activities for verbs and adverbs and answer pages, too.

Dino Tail Activity
Book: Bumpus Jumpus Dinosaurumpus Guy Parker, Guy Parker-Rees, Tony Mitton

• Read Bumpus Jumpus Dinosaurumpus.
• Everyone takes their own space to explore the movements of the dinosaurs. The teacher says, “Stomp like Tyranosaurus Rex, run fast like Deinonychuses, move slowly like a Brontosaurus, now fly like Pteranodon, and swim like a Hadrosaur. Give the kids time to explore each movement.
• Play “Catching the Dinosaur’s Tail” The children make a dinosaur by standing in a line and holding the shoulders of the child in front of them.
• On the signal, go, the head of the dinosaur or first person tries to touch the tail or the last person in line.
• If the body breaks or kids let go, the Dinosaur dies, and the head must become the tail.
• All the kids spread their legs apart so the tail can crawl through to become the head of the dinosaur.
• If the head person tags the tail, he remains the head and gets another turn. Put some music on for fun!

Songs: Tune: Eensy, Weensy Spider
All the big fat dinosaurs come to the dino-dance
Stomp through the trees and watch the others prance
Some swim so low and some fly very fast
All the big fat dinosaurs come to dance at last
